What Is the Ideal Baby Room Temperature In Australia

What Is the Ideal Baby Room Temperature In Australia? In the harsh Australian climate, temperatures can often range between cold and hot nights. If you have a newborn baby, ensuring moderate temperatures and clean air quality can be important for their health. Air conditioning is essential when it comes to Australian weather. Air conditioning isn’t bad for your baby’s health, but there are some cautions to consider when maintaining the temperate of your baby’s room.

Here at Smarter Air & Electrical, we have over 22 years of experience installing air conditioners for Australian families throughout Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We understand the importance of comfortable room temperatures and excellent air quality for a safe sleeping environment for newborns. In this article, we discuss the ideal baby room temperature in Australia, list air conditioning features that can help you ensure the perfect temperature and detail some tips to consider when cooling or heating your baby’s room.

Ideal baby room temperature in Australia

The ideal temperature for baby room in summer Australia can vary depending on many factors and who you talk to. It can also vary depending on the type of air conditioner you have. Some people say 25 degrees is the optimal temperature, but other people also state the ideal temperature for babies room is between 18 and 22 degrees. We believe that for newborns sleeping in short-sleeve clothing, the optimal room temperature is 23 or 24 degrees. If you put the baby to bed in a sleeping bag or dress baby in multiple layers, then you may need to adjust the temperature range accordingly for the baby to get a better night’s sleep. This can maintain their body temperature at an optimal point and ensure they have a comfortable sleep.

Air conditioner features for ensuring a healthy environment

There are many types of air conditioning products available on the market, from ducted air conditioners to split systems. Many air conditioners have unique features that can be ideal for maintaining and monitoring room temperatures. Below, you can explore some air conditioning features to look for when regulating your baby’s room temperature:

Zone control

Depending on the air conditioner system you purchase, it may have zone control features. These features are most commonly present in ducted air conditioners, but some modern split systems may provide a similar type of control through a smartphone app. Zone control allows you to set a specific room temperature so the baby can get a good night’s sleep. This means you can set the baby’s room to a steady temperature of 23 or 24 degrees whilst cooling or heating the rest of the home to your ideal temperature.

Wi-Fi remote control

Modern air conditioners often have embedded Wi-Fi capabilities and a smartphone application associated with the brand. Through the application on your smartphone, you can connect to your air conditioner from anywhere, provided you have a network connection. From the application, you can monitor and alter room temperatures. You can also review several statistics, such as humidity and air quality, depending on the sensors installed. These sensors allow you to achieve a comfortable whilst also ensuring the baby is in a safe sleep environment by monitoring the indoor air quality.

Humidification systems

One of the most important features to have in your air conditioner is a humidifier. Depending on your air conditioner, it may have an embedded humidifier, otherwise, you can purchase a separate humidification system. Humidifying the room is important because prolonged use of air conditioners can cause a dry environment, resulting in several health concerns for your baby. If the atmosphere is too cold and dry, it can affect your baby’s respiratory tract. It may also result in itchy eyes, rashes and dry skin.

Particle filters

Besides maintaining your baby’s core temperature, it can also be crucial to maintain the air quality in your home. If you run your air conditioner for prolonged periods without opening windows or letting fresh air in, there may be some harmful particles present. Many air conditioners have advanced technology that filters out harmful particles, such as bacteria and mould.

Adjustable fan speeds

Placing your baby’s crib directly underneath the air conditioner’s airflow is usually not a great idea, as it can make them too cold or hot. Some air conditioners have controllable fan speeds, which can be excellent for optimising the direct airflow in your baby’s room. If the air conditioner has Wi-Fi control, you can also adjust the fan speed from your smartphone.

Compressor sound dampeners

Some air conditioning units can be excessively noisy, resulting in an uncomfortable sleeping environment for your baby. Whilst the sound of an air conditioner doesn’t relate to your baby’s core temperature, it can help them have a peaceful sleep. You can consider purchasing an air conditioning system with inbuilt sound dampeners to reduce the noise from the compressor.

Tips to consider for your baby’s health when cooling or heating a home

Below, you can explore some tips to consider when heating or cooling your baby’s room temperature:

    • Dress your baby appropriately. It’s usually important to ensure you dress your baby appropriately so they’re not too hot or cold. You might consider baby sleeping bags or short sleeve clothing.

    • Monitor the room temperature and humidity. Monitoring the temperature of the baby’s room can be important because babies sleep deeply when too warm, which some scientists have linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Monitoring the humidity levels can also be an excellent idea to ensure the room isn’t too dry or too humid.

    • Ensure your baby sleeps in the right position. Babies regulate their core body temperature through their head and face. For this reason, laying your baby on their back with the baby’s head uncovered is usually best, so it might be best to ditch the head covering or beanie!

    • Avoid sudden temperature changes. Babies are typically highly sensitive to extreme temperature changes. To avoid these sudden temperature changes, it’s usually a good idea to have your entire house at a similar temperature, which zone control features often make easy.
